Our musical love affair with Jim Lawrie only grows stronger with every release.

triple j premiered his brand new single ‘Just Like Normal’ this week, showing a slightly different direction; layers of instruments and backing vocals that create a fuller sound for Lawrie, who can quite easily silence a room with just his acoustic guitar.  It’s tough not to compare Jim’s unique songwriting to the greats; Bob Dylan, Paul Kelly, Neil Young.

Jim’s distinctive voice is reminiscent of some modern acts hailing from the Northern Hemisphere – hitting that higher register with emotion like Christian Zucconi of Grouplove or Nils Edenloff of The Rural Alberta Advantage. Jim Lawrie seems to solely have this market covered in Australia.

Lyrically focussed, Lawrie is a poet – repeating the lyrics “We don’t need to dream no more” pulling directly at your heartstrings and making us feel like we’re all in this together.
