The Toff in Town
Community
Ali Barter first came to our attention back in 2012 with her debut EP Trip. The EP featured the track Marigold which we were lucky enough to film, in what turned out to be one of our favourite Large Noises shoots ever.
Community is the first single from Barter’s follow up EP of the same name. The release features all of the things we loved about Marigold (face meltingly smooth vocals, great songwriting and moody guitar). It’s not all rainbows and marigolds though – Community showcases a much darker and more brooding side to Barter’s music.
Ali’s voice has an unsuspecting amount of power to it. There’s an edginess that’s hidden perfectly beneath that silky smooth coating. Occasionally it will poke its head out and you’ll feel the words hit you right in the chest – but never fear – she’ll quickly heal you with her next phrase. Community reflects on our desire to belong and the vices we use to feel secure. It’s mature and honest and is the perfect follow up for this talented artist.
This time Ali is back with just an electric guitar in hand. Watch her perform Community here in the The Toff in Town courtyard. Having recently supported the likes of Husky, The War on Drugs and Phosphorescent, 2015 is proving to be a big year for this rising artist.
Ali Barter plays her Melbourne EP launch at the Workers Club Hotel on Saturday 24 January 2015. Tickets available here.
